If one
excepts limited some regions like for example the
one of Mbuji-Majis or others in the East, a card
economic of the Democratic Republic of Congo has
three poles of development appeared. Kisangani,
handicapped by the events endeavors to take
his/her/its role.
The main
weight of the Congolese economy is therefore
today in the zone of Kinshasa and in the High
Katanga around the Lubumbashi-LikasiKolwezi
axis. The considerable part that the contribution
of the Gecomin represents in the finances of the
state, permits to say that this region that is
our field of action, was probably, is again and
will be a long time again one of the two main
poles of development of Congo.
It is well
sensible the enhancement of the rich layers of
copper of the Katanga that was the motor element
of the development of this region. Indeed we
reached our size of today by successive stages
and to each of these stages, our development had
beneficial effects on our setting.
The
exploitation of the copper mines gave birth to a
set of economic activities in all sectors,
secondary and tertiary especially, that were to
the departure essentially oriented toward our
enterprise and motivated by it.
He/it is
not of industrial success without a favorable
human factor: have ourselves summer as well to
the basis of a development extraordinary of the
man, so much to the point of social view that
technological, cultural and civic.
Regardless
of the enterprises of which the production or the
services contributed directly to build our
society, the effect multiplier of the spending
power that we didn't quit to create in an
increasing way, accelerated the creation of a
consumer goods industry with all extensions that
it includes.
Certainly,
with our mines and our factories distributed on
an axis of 300 km, because of the multiplicity of
our activity centers and of their interconnected,
we are very extensively present in this part of
the Katanga. Some travelers they don't have says
that we were omnipresent. One spoke indeed a lot
of the "power" of our society and this
advertisement exempt of ulterior motive, doesn't
always serve us. This power is of course real, it
is inherent to our economic size; she/it is in
fact the fruit of our organization and our
dynamism. But an abuse of this power is
absolutely inconceivable since the Gecomin is an
authentically national society and serves from
then on, by definition, the interest of all.
To use a
lapidary formula, we would say gladly that we are
the auxiliaries of the state. We are it besides
not only on an economic level but also, and in a
measure that we want increasing, on a civic
level.
All it
shows that the objectives that we defined in the
beginning of this work answer to the role well
and to the duty that imposes us our destiny.
To various
stages of his/her/its existence, our society gave
birth in various enterprises erected in
independent societies whose social object was
directly the supply of goods or services
necessary to our activity.
La
Sogefor
The Society
General Congolese of the Strength Hydroélectriques
was specifically created in order to arrange the
falls Small horn on the Lufira and to construct
the central Francqui there. This one is always
the property of the Sogefor that exploits
otherwise also for our account the central Bia on
the Lufira and the central Delcommunes and The
Marinel on the Lualaba. The middle yearly
production of the set of these four power
stations passes ballast 2,5 billions of kWh. In
link with our engineers-advice, we confided to
the Sogefor an important role on the other hand
in the preparation of the project of a fifth
power station in the throats of Zilo, the future
power station of Busanga.
La
Sogelec
The excess
electric energy, that we don't use for our own
industrial needs, is reputed to be produced for
account of the state. She/it is bought by a set
of consumers among which for example the Railroad
of the B.C.K. for his/her/its electrified lines
and the Metal kat for the electrolysis of zinc
and the cadmium. To part these special consumers,
all the energy consumed in our region is
distributed in the different centers of use and
in particular in the cities by the Society
General Congolese of electricity. The Sogelec
constructed the whole network of distribution
from the centers distributors of the Gecomin.
La
Sogechim
The
Industrial and Chemical General Society of the
Katanga was created, as his/her/its name
indicates it, to provide some indispensable basis
chemicals to our exploitations. His/her/its main
production is the sulphuric acid whose Gecomin is
a very important consumer for the lixiviation of
his/her/its extracts. The Sogechim possesses in
Likasi a factory to acid of a capacity of 135.000
t per year.
The raw material of this factory is constituted
by the raw extracts of zinc that we send Kipushi
in Likasi and that are grilled there for our
account.
The Sogechim exploits a factory otherwise for the
manufacture of fatty acid by hydrolysis of oil of
palm, capable to treat 6.000 tons of oil per
year. Finally, it is the Sogechim that supplies
in drinking water the industrial and urban
agglomeration of Likasi thanks to an installation
of purification and sterilization of water by the
ozone.
Afridex
We are the
main customer of the Society African of
explosives whose factory is situated in Kakontwe
in the suburb of Likasi. This factory produces a
few 3.000 t of explosives per year. In 1968, a
mutation operated itself in the manufactures of
Afridex that abandoned the production of
explosives chloratés to pass to the explosives
to basis of nitrate of ammonium, that is used
henceforth in our mines and careers.
Ciments
Métallurgiques de Likasi
This
society is also installed in Kakontwe. She/it
treats in her/its cement factory the slags of the
factories of the Gecomin. She/it exploits besides
for our account an oven to rotary lime that
belongs to the Gecomin. The yearly capacity of
production of the cement factory is of 70.000
tons. A second oven of a capacity of 200 tons,
will be put under way in the beginning of 1970.
Les
Minoteries du Katanga
This
society, essentially created to assure provision
in supplies of our working populations, has an
activity that overflows more distinctly than the
other societies the setting of the Gecomin.
She/it exploits three factories: in Lubumbashi,
in Kakontwe and in Kolwezi. She/it manufactures
the cornflour and cassava mainly. Oils, the sound
and food for livestock and poultry are
by-products of his/her/its manufactures. The
factory of Kakontwe also produces the iodized
salt, of the oil of palm vitaminée as well as a
certain quantity of peanut oil.
La
Cofoco
The
Fundamental Company of Congo, society of
architecture and real estate enterprises,
constructed the houses of the staff of the
Gecomin and others big societies of the province.
She/it rents them to the societies or sells them
to them. In this case, she/it generally keeps the
management of it. She/it assures besides the
maintenance of all our buildings.
Charbonnages
de la Luena
Luena is
situated on the Lubumbashi-Kamina rail, no far
from Bukama. This society exploits a layer of
coal there in the open by electric shovels and
draglines. The coal of Luena doesn't have the
features of a metallurgic fuel. He/it is used
like coal of fire-chamber by the railroads, the
cement factory and the Gecomin for some of
his/her/its metallurgic factories. The potential
yearly production is the order of 120.000 t per
year.
La
Métalkat
The
Metallurgic Society of the Katanga possesses an
important factory in Kolwezi that produces the
electrolytic zinc of very high quality in ingots
and the electrolytic cadmium in sticks, from the
grilled extracts that take the factory to acid of
the Sogechim and that we sell to him. The
production of Métalkat in 1968 was of 62.574
tons of ingots of exportable zinc and 320 tons of
cadmium in sticks.
